INTRODUCTION TO DOGS

BUILDING SAFE & POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS

This course is designed to help children understand how to safely and respectfully interact with dogs. Whether your family already has a dog, is thinking about getting one, or your child is fearful around dogs, this session provides a gentle, confidence-building foundation.

Day / Time: Monday - Thursday 10am - 4pm [NSW school holiday]; Saturday 10am-4pm [Year-round]

Ideal for:

  • Families with a dog who want to teach children safe, respectful interaction

  • Children who are nervous or fearful around dogs and need positive exposure

  • Families considering getting a dog and wanting to prepare their child first

  • Children learn when and how to approach a dog, including the importance of asking for permission. They'll practise calm, respectful greeting techniques that help dogs feel at ease.

  • Children will be guided through reading signs that show whether a dog is happy, worried, or needs space. With fun visuals and role play, they'll learn to notice wiggly tails, tucked ears, and everything in between.

  • We’ll explore how children can move and behave in ways that help dogs feel safe, like using a quiet voice and calm hands, and what to do if a dog barks or jumps unexpectedly.

  • Children will build confidence by practising safe, age-appropriate ways to engage with dogs, like helping fill a water bowl or giving a dog space when they need it. These early, gentle interactions help foster empathy and understanding.
